Moulding Floating Candles

Requirements
  • Floating candle cast
  • Floating candle wick
  • Paraffin and stearine or moulding mix (ready-made)
  • Mini-Bain
  • Electrical hotplate or moulding urn
  • Mixing rod
  • Thermometer
  • Colour tablets (only for coloured floating candles)

    Step 1
    Preparing the wax
  • Mix 7 parts paraffin with 1 part stearine or use moulding mix
  • Heat to a maximum temperature of 90 °C
  • If required, add a colour tablet (ratio: max 1 tablet per litre)
  • Stir well

Tip: Provide floating candles with a pleasant fragrance with one of Gildewerk’s perfume oils. Sometimes it is better not to add any stearine to the paraffin. Stearine can affect the aroma and colour of a candle.

    Step 2
    Moulding
  • Fill the forms in the cast with wax to just below the brim
  • Wait for a film to appear on the wax
  • Place a wick in every form
  • Allow the wax to set. The candle will shrink slightly
  • Fill the gaps with hot wax

Tip 1: The wick is more likely to remain upright if you first fill the form with wax and wait for a film to appear. A second advantage is that the lower end of the wick rests on a layer of set wax. As a result, the wick will not come into contact with water when it floats in a dish, and it will burn better.

Tip 2: The candles will cool sooner if the cast is placed in a shallow layer of water.

Tip 3: Never discard wax residue in a basin. This can cause blockages. Wax residue can always be reused.

    Step 3
    Removing the candles
  • Allow the candles to cool completely (possibly in a shallow layer of water)
  • Turn the cast upside down
  • Push the candles out of the cast

Tip: The candles are more easily removed from the cast if it is smeared with Vaseline beforehand.
